Early in my career, I was what they called a road warrior — an IT consultant moving city to city for a major firm. Every extended contract, I’d line up a local doctor and dentist, just in case. Back then you went by referrals; you asked around, someone vouched, done.
Now, with decades of internet behind us, you can pull up a doctor’s training, board status, disciplinary history — all searchable. Ironically, most people still use their parents’ method: word of mouth, bedside manner, “you gotta see my guy, he’s the best.”
As an introvert, I’ve noticed extroverts have the inside lane in a system that rewards charm. I don’t need my doctor to give me a hug. I need him right. If he’s at the top of his game, I’ll forgive the fact that he’s rusty on the knock-knock jokes.
It’s just odd how intelligent people scrupulously research a plumber’s reviews, then use the same method to select their physician.
